PG&E asked for the public's help Wednesday to make sure there was enough power to keep air conditioners running on what was expected to be one of the hottest days of the year. The power company had enough electricity to handle the demand, but needed the public not to use dish washers or clothes washers and dryers during peak hours from 4 to 7 p.m today in order to ensure there would be enough power.
A military judge has sentenced a South Valley soldier to life in prison without parole for killing two fellow soldiers and abducting their baby. 24 year old Army Specialist Ivette Davila of Bakersfield was sentenced late Tuesday at Lewis-McChord Army Base in Washington State. Davila pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of premeditated murder and one count of kidnapping to avoid a possible death penalty. She was chargd in the March 2008 shootings of Staff Sgt. Timothy Miller and Sgt. Randi Miller in the couple's home.
A Reedley man will do time for his role in a massive marijuana garden that was found growing in the Sierra National Forest.
20 year old Arturo Saldana was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to taking part in the illegal grow. More than 49,000 pot plants were uprooted when the plot was discovered. Five others have already been convicted in the case.
The Post Fire near Lebec has scorched more than 1300 acres since it started Tuesday afternoon. 650 firefighters have gained 30% containment of the blaze which is slowly moving west into US Forest Service land. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a "state of emergency" in Kern County to secure more resources to fight the blaze.
The California Highway Patrol is looking for the driver of a car that struck and killed a pedestrian in Tulare County Tuesday morning. The Highway Patrol said someone called them reporting a person lying in the roadway near Avenue 80 and Road 136 south of Pixley. Officers discovered the person had died. Authorities believe the car fled the scene after the incident. Officers are still looking for the driver.
The CSU faculty union claims that public and private funds have been improperly comingled in California State University auxiliary organizations. Representatives of the California Faculty Association say they found proof of financial mismanagement in the minutes of closed-door meetings involving top CSU executives. Association members called for a state investigation and audit, and also urged adoption of legislation that would subject auxiliary organizations to greater public scrutiny.
Fresno Unified School District replaced 30 diesel buses with natural gas-powered ones over the summer. The new buses emit 98% less particulate matter than the old ones. The new buses feature seat belts, which are said to make bus transportation eight times safer than a passenger car.
Pest fighters report encouraging news in their efforts to eradicate a serious grapevine pest. As they await the year's third generation of European grapevine moths, officials say none have emerged so far. The first generation, earlier this year, produced more than a hundred thousand moths in Napa County alone. The invasive moth threatens grapes and other California crops. Quarantines control shipments of grapes in areas where moths have been found.
